Well Known Internees in Ilag VII

Eugene Vanderpool (1906-1989): American archaeologist. He was in Athens for study purposes during the German occupation of Greece in 1941. After the US entered the war, he was arrested, interned in Laufen and released in 1944 as part of a prisoner exchange. After the war, Vanderpool was a professor of classical archaeology at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens from 1947 until his death.

Freddy Johnson (1904-1961): American jazz pianist. Like many other Black musicians, he emigrated to Europe in 1928 due to the severe discrimination in the United States and the European enthusiasm for American jazz. Johnson performed with various jazz bands, especially in France and Holland, where he accompanied Marlene Dietrich, among others. He was arrested in Amsterdam in January 1942 and interned in Laufen and Tittmoning until February 1944, when he was released as part of an exchange and was able to return to the United States.

Henry Mollison (1905-1985): Scottish theater and film actor. Mollison was in the United States at the outbreak of World War II and wanted to return to Great Britain by ship. However, the ship was captured by the Nazis and he was taken prisoner, spending a total of five years in German prison camps, including Ilag VII. During his imprisonment, he organized 56 theater shows. One of the Laufen theater posters was designed by Max Brandel.

Jack Taylor (1899-1963): American light heavyweight boxer. Taylor defeated Max Schmeling by technical knockout after ten rounds in Cologne on May 9, 1925. He was arrested while being in the Netherlands and interned as an enemy alien in 1941, spending most of his time in Tittmoning, but also some time in Laufen. Taylor was repatriated in 1944 as part of a prisoner exchange. After that, he returned to the Netherlands.
